Australian Gemstone Pendants

Australia is rich in mineral resources in easy accessible regions. The most obvious in the jewellery market are gemstones. These range from precious opals, sapphires, topaz, garnet, jasper, zircon and quartz to list just a few. The rich mineral regions can be found in virtually all states of Australia.

With so many beautiful lapidary materials being found in Australia, through our own efforts and through various Lapidary Clubs we have been able to obtain a wide range of gemstone ‘roughs’ that we cut and polish on site.

One of my favourite jaspers is Mookite or Mookaite. Australia is the only location in the world where this beautiful jasper can be found.

According to an Australian outback prospector the name "mookaite" is derived from the locality where the rock is dug, namely Mooka Creek. The Aboriginal word "mooka" means "running waters," no doubt in reference to the many fresh water springs that feed Mooka Creek." Other sources claim that this vibrant material was named for a sheep station (ranch) near an abundant source of the stone, found in the Kennedy Ranges.

By making our own settings we are not limited to standard sizes or designs. Unique pieces of jewellery are just that, and, like many wire artists, I endeavour to create pieces that highlight the natural beauty of the stone in attractive settings that also reflect the movement in the wire. Highlighting the flow and movement in the wire is where my real passion lies.
